To reliably switch the house state to night and back it would be nice to detect when we are actually in bed instead of relying on some mostly-true-but-sometimes-very-much-not-so time triggers. I will use this issue to aggregate what I researched and found out to maybe someday implement a proper detection.

Weight sensors are the obvious way to do this but the way our bed is constructed does not allow for the easy way of just putting a total of 4 sensors under the bed and be done with it. Maybe it can be done with 4 sensors under each base and adding those up but we already had a problem with the bases "floating" (and me falling right trough the bed in the middle of the night) when not properly lying on the middle part.

Good thing is our respective weights allow me to easily deduce who is in bed right now from the total!

Another idea would be to use smart plugs for our bedside mobile phone chargers. We both charge our phones overnight so when both phones are plugged in at the same time there's a 99% chance we have gone to bed.
