If I hover over a link in node A (whether in core, details, notes) I would like a popup to appear showing some of the information in the target node (eg, node Z). This would give me the opportunity to check the target node's content without having to travel there. If a node had several links with non-descriptive names, I could hover over each to see which of the links take me where I want to go.

This feature is part of 2 Bible study apps I use - freebie theWord and expensive Logos. It is very very handy in both. I suspect it would be just as handy in Freeplane.
I made this request in the old forum in 2016. It got one favorable response.
I submitted a feature request which now sparks a 403 error. I cannot remember if the feature request ever went anywhere. I just thought it might be time to revisit this idea.
In a small map like the image represents, this might not be that useful. But in a large map I believe it would be.
I already have MapInsight v1.2 installed. As excellent as it is, It does not do what I am requesting or even serve as a workaround.
The only way I can see information in a "target node" is to make a connector - then I see the target's info. But I don't want a lot of unnecessary connectors cluttering the map. If MI had the same functionality for links that it does for connectors it would be OK for a workaround. But even then, it is not an equivalent to a hovering-initiated popup within the map.
Or maybe I don't fully understand MapInsight's functionality. The video seems clear it is centered around connectors.
Sorry, I saw the red arrow in your image and my mind immediately thought about connectors.
Now, I see what you mean. Wikipedia is a very most famous example of use of this feature.
I think it can't be done with scripts. I've never seen a script with this kind of interaction directly in the map. What can be done is something like MapInsight, that brings the text of the current node to a popup window, and there you can have a tooltip on hover.
