Did you think about adding small external MCU to switch voltage divider on/off and separate it from motor controls?
I've just bought one of this printers and was looking for a way to get rid of that blank piece of tape at the beginning of the label. And then I found your github page :)
Have you made any progress with this? Should I try to find my own solution, or maybe this is not worth the time?

The blank tape was the reason I wanted to hack mine, but the idea fell flat when I realized the blank length of tape can't really be avoided: it's the length between the printhead and the cutter blade.
The only "solution" is to plan ahead and chain print as many labels as possible...

I've completely missed this point! And I've already opened my printer and took one of my Attiny's to make a hack.
Thanks that you answered so soon and spared several hours of useless work :)
