What You Need

  • A computer with a web browser and an internet connection.
  • DOSBox-X, a fork of DOSBox that supports Windows 95. You can download it from here.
  • A Windows 95 hard disk image file. You can download one from here [^1^] or here [^2^].
  • WinImage, a tool that can manipulate disk image files. You can download it from here.
  • Optional: Some Windows 95 software or games that you want to run on DOSBox. You can find some freeware or shareware programs on here.

How to Install Windows 95 on DOSBox

  1. Extract the DOSBox-X folder from the downloaded zip file and run dosbox-x.exe.
  2. Extract the Windows 95 hard disk image file from the downloaded zip file. You should see a file named Win95.img or something similar.
  3. Run WinImage and drag the Win95.img file into the WinImage window. This will open the contents of the disk image file.
  4. If you have any Windows 95 software or games that you want to transfer to the disk image file, drag them into the WinImage window. You can also create folders or delete files as needed.
  5. Save the changes to the disk image file by clicking File > Save or pressing Ctrl+S.
  6. Close WinImage and go back to DOSBox-X.
  7. Type "imgmount c Win95.img" (without quotes) and press Enter. This will mount the disk image file as drive C: in DOSBox-X.
  8. Type "boot -l c" (without quotes) and press Enter. This will boot Windows 95 from drive C: in DOSBox-X.
  9. Wait for Windows 95 to load. You may see some errors or warnings during the boot process, but you can ignore them.
  10. Congratulations! You have successfully installed Windows 95 on DOSBox. You can now explore the desktop, run programs, play games, or customize settings as you wish.

Tips and Tricks

  • To exit Windows 95 and return to DOSBox-X, press Ctrl+F9.
  • To exit DOSBox-X and close the emulator, type "exit" (without quotes) and press Enter.
  • To change the screen resolution or color depth of Windows 95, right-click on the desktop, select Properties, select Settings, and adjust the options as desired.
  • To enable sound support in Windows 95, you need to install a sound driver. You can download one from here. Follow the instructions on how to install it on Windows 95.
  • To enable CD-ROM support in Windows 95, you need to edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the disk image file. You can do this by opening WinImage, opening the disk image file, right-clicking on AUTOEXEC.BAT, selecting Extract, editing it with a text editor, saving it, and dragging it back into WinImage. You need to add a line that says "mount d /path/to/cdrom.iso -t cdrom" (without quotes), where /path/to/cdrom.iso is the location of your CD-ROM image file on your computer. Save the changes to the disk image file and reboot Windows 95 in DOSBox 8cf37b1e13
