Very common issue affecting everyone.

I doubt it. It's a client issue, prd is downloading too much unnecessary metadata (in sequence no less). Even a very fast server won't fix it - it downloads version.gz for all repos, when only a single versions.gz should be downloaded (if any, in reality even that's too much data, as we just need a single pool value)

PS: I've developed a new download system, with a working name of 'nextgen', which I plan to use to replace rapid/plasma/etc. It's already used in BAR and SpringBoard and so far it's pretty great. I plan to give a detailed explanation of the system later on, but basically I consider rapid to be a backup system until I'm happy to fully switch everything to 'nextgen' - no further rapid updates are planned from me.
