Time execution issue

We are following the situation when decreasing Java heap size, out tests' time execution decreased almost x2. But after decreasing heap size sometimes we obviously catch Java low heap exception. How it can be? And what else details should I add?

We use:
Java: 1.8
TestNG: 6.14.3
Galen: 2.3.7
