khal --new <date> <time> <description>

just saves to DB, which shows correctly in ikhal but doesn't show up in vdir.

Strange, it works for me. I'll have a look ASAP why it isn't working for you.

Btw i changed the API of vdirsyncer to only accept unicode strings in item.raw.

Re-reading the docs: which is the default calendar?

Actually, it does seem to work, but i still don't understand how it sets the default calendar.
