In contrast to real pages virtual pages are created on the fly and therefore it should be possible to pass objects and arrays directly to the virtual page template.
Currently virtual pages expect data like it would come from text files (as strings) and objects or arrays have to be yaml-encoded and decoded to be transferred to the virtual page.
