Many OS distributions will compress man pages by default. Since hub looks for the files to exist, it cannot find hub-foo.1.gz (or whatever you happen to use).

A better way to find man pages would be to check if man 1 hub-foo exits successfully. The man-db program will exit 16, if the asked-for page does not exist -- and it will automatically handle detection of compressed man pages.
