The standard spinner is out of place. It would be nice to have something more GNOMEy.

This requires making APNGs... so it's not entirely trivial. (Gimp does not support APNGs, for instance.)

The new spinning and connecting throbbers really look awesome!

Thanks!

I'm glad you like both of them. The spinner is pretty much what's used in GNOME, but I had to think creatively for the connecting one. I made it 3 dots like the wireless connecting icon and animated it similar to ones like on Facebook. It's great that it worked out — I personally like it better than the default Firefox spinning-backwards-with-a-different-color indicator (but I'm biased). (:

Yeah the connecting animation made me think of network manager immedialtely, so I think this animation is a good choice :-) What did you use to create those APNGs btw?

It's convoluted, but I made the graphic frames in Inkscape, then exported to PNG, then split them into actual different frames in Gimp, saved them manually, and ran apngasm (http://sourceforge.net/projects/apngasm/) on the PNGs at the command line.

Gimp does not support APNG (except for a hacky plugin which requires rebuilding libpng with a patch), and I did not write a frame splitting script for Inkscape.

I did use the split.c plugin for Gimp to break up the frames. You have to install it with gimptool-2.0 --install split.c and need the necessary gimp-devel packages and dependencies.
