This projects is along similar lines to what I am trying to do in Intake, and I think we can collaborate. Specifically: Intake should allow you to list the available datasets and get their metadata details for searching, and then pass them to your code to the the actual opening when the user has found what they want.

Do you have any interest in this kind of thing?
