Description

Nothing is rendered in Internet Explorer 11.
The console shows plenty of:
Unable to get property 'nodeType' of undefined or null reference

Expected outcome

The example is rendered, not a blank page.

Actual outcome

Page is blank and the console has several of these:
Unable to get property 'nodeType' of undefined or null reference

Steps to reproduce

Navigate to http://polymerelements.github.io/app-layout-templates/index.html with Internet Explorer 11.
