Backspace doesn't work on elements with pattern attribute set

For elements with a validation pattern, the backspace key doesn't work. This behaviour occurs in the official demo and in my own tests. New characters can be entered, but nothing can be deleted. This occurs whether or not the text content matches the pattern. I'm using Chrome 36.
