Statue honoring Columbus and Colorado's dubious legacy as the first state to recognize Columbus Day as a holiday was removed by direct action overnight June 25, 2020. The statue does not depict Columbus but does have a plaque commemorating Columbus and Colorado's history with regards to Columbus Day. It has been consistently controversial, and the American Indian Movement (AIM) has repeatedly demanded the removal of the statue throughout its 50 year history. AIM has also repeatedly protested the Columbus Day parade through Denver, with demands often including removal of the statue and/or plaque in addition to changing the holiday.
