I saw this testing spring-security-ui. The plugin includes one domain class and it works fine in a 3.0.10 app, but when using it in a 3.1.0.M3 app it won't start because compilation fails:

I assume this is because of dependency conflicts between the plugin's grails-datastore-gorm-4.0.7.RELEASE.jar and the app's grails-datastore-gorm-5.0.0.RC2.jar.
The plugin project uses Grails 3.0.9 and Gradle 2.9.

yeah this is not fixable unfortunately, you can compile the plugin with 3.0.10 against GORM 5 and make GORM 5 a required dependency, this would work in both releases.
