Once we have basic Continuous Delivery automation in place (to push new code commits from github to staging environment), developers' confidence will increase when we can demonstrate automatically that new code commits can at least (a) still propagate to the site and (b) allow pages to be served.

A handful of smoke tests (as in, is the site a smoking heap now?) will be a small but significant step towards the goal of error-free, high-velocity development.
