It's not. It's a very early experiment with alternative interfaces to OO in R. I wouldn't recommend using it.

@hadley Actually I arrived to it through some package that has proto as a dependency. Then, what should replace proto in such cases?

R6 is likely to be the most straightforward replacement, but proto-style OO programming is unlike anything else.
