Or any active fork that is known?

For alternatives, there is for instance https://github.com/jshjohnson/Choices without jQuery dependency (though it seems to be looking for maintainers) or Select2 (also a jQuery plugin)

I am very happy this still works in current jquery; a great complement to the developer(s)!

I do really, really, hope that if a future jquery breaks this great piece of code, that someone can patch this up!

PS: I added 'enable_multi_word_search' in my personal version anyone interested?

I am curious why this project is marked deprecated at all when there is no replacement or upgrade path to any new project. Perhaps instead of deprecated, what the project needs is a new maintainer?

For folks who find this, it looks like this may be the successor for chosen:

Another alternative which doesn't depend on jQuery is tom-select.js
