Title :- GENERIC ACTION CODE LANGUAGE
Abstract :-
Generic Action Code Language project is around the eTrice project . The eTrice Project provides implementation of ROOM
( Real-time Object Oriented Modeling ) language . eTrice has both text and gui based environment to create models &
program using ROOM . State machines might execute entry, exit or action codes. This code currently is written in the target
language of the code generator and handled as a plain character string . As such it is a black box for the model and
no validation is possible . The aim of GACL (Generic Action Code
Language) project is to design a language to write DetailCode & develop converters from GACL to java and c/c++ . After
that it will be integrated with ROOM in order to enhance eTrice .
Detailed Information and Benefits to Community :-
The eTrice project is largely for enterprise use and stands with softwares like Rational of IBM in modeling real-time
systems . Although under development it is still one of most significant open source software in its field . Enhancing
and making it a software able to compete other software of its kind is equal to unlocking a all new area for open source
community . The first one to take advantage of it would surely be eclipse . Such milestone surely gathers attention of
a significant fraction of community towards it .
For developers/programmers who use eTrice there are following important benefits :-
1.) With a Generic Action Code Language models would become independent of the target language.
This would allow to create model libraries of re-usable model classes.
2.) Integration of the action language into the model would close the 'modeling gap' of ROOM and allow for
e.g. extended model validation on the base of abstract execution.
3.) Currently while using eTrice project whenever we need to define the code for action of an operation in ROOM in
the target language . Writing this may appear easier in small Wizard for operation may seem fine but writing this
in a string in DetailCode taking care of escape sequences is work not supposed to be done by humans .
4.) It is good to shorten extensively used functions like System.out.println() , System.out.print() to simply printl()
and print() functions which will work for cout of c++ too . Similarly substitute of printf functions too which is
available both in java and c .
5.) The GACL would be designed in such a way that user would have to worry least about syntax and focus much more over
semantics . This will be achieved by TIMTOWTDI (There Is More Than One Way Two Do It) approache followed by perl .
But it would be strictly taken care while writing the grammar of GACL that it never becomes too cryptic like perl
for even of 50 lines of code .
6.) Since even after integration of GACL in eTrice we would be still generating Java and C code from written program/
model . So it would be taken care GACL has all features that are common in almost every imperative language and
Syntax that would be used would be a hybrid of Java and C 's syntax in order to make it easy to remember and code .
The basic features list is below
6.1) Variable Declarations ( with optional initializers ) and Function Declaration
6.2) Comparison & arithmetic expressions
6.3) Basic types , and user defined types
6.4) If-else blocks and ladders
6.5) For , while , for each , enhanched for each
6.6) Support for iterators (that can be used by for each loops ).
6.7) Function Calls with arguments & diff types i.e. ref/value/address .
6.8) type checking and as much as possible implicit type casting .
6.9) Casts corresponding to static casts in C .
7.) Having a simple domain specific language makes it easier and more efficient to work with eTrice . With this
enhancement the scope of use of eTrice will expand also it would become much handy for developers . Also it can be
used by students in universities studying on Real-time Object Oriented Systems
Required Resources :-
As it clear from the abstract of project the resources needed are just those needed to design and implement a simple
imperative programming language . In this case we would go through documentation of c/c++ and java for few aspects
such as operators , type checking , variable declaration etc their syntax and semantics in these languages . Then we
would be using Xtext and Xtend to implement this language a reading of their documentation is also need . After all this
we would integrate it with ROOM in eTrice , so documentation of eTrice and syntax & semantics for ROOM used in eTrice
will suffice . Although i have done much of above specified work already , but just to list resources required .
I am using github.com (github.com/hckkid is my address on github) and would be commiting to it unless eclipse allows
commiting to eTrice's git repository . Lastly eclipse platform is needed for plugin development , design & implmentation
of GACL which i already have too completely configured . A wiki page for project is also created which would be updated
regularly .
Background :-
As specified in required resources there is much of documentation reading required to do the best . So i will be spending
time till the start of GSoC program in reading these documentations . I would also give reading to javadoc in order to
use it to generate documentation from source code . Although i would make a separate documentation with illustrations
too . Along with this learning more of eclipse plug-in development would be great , which i will do by reading and
dicussing with community through mailing lists and IRC channels . Thats all for having a strong background to do this
project .
Deliverables :-
Although these are much clear from detailed information , but i will list it briefly hereby .
1.) Designing syntax of GACL and using Xtext to implement it .
2.) Using Xtend to generate converter from GACL to JAVA,C/C++ .
3.) Integration with ROOM in eTrice .
4.) Enhancing the source by adding features , making it more effecient if time allows .
Schedule (by timeline) :-
Considering the features written in (4.) of Detailed Information section as milestones and Deliverable as phase of their
development ( with first three deliverables as necessary) , i have planned for each week of program and took care that
all milestones are indeed achived also within time limit . Each week is associated with one milestone . I would be doing
my work according to following plan for first 10 week , every week first of all first three phases of corresponding
milestone would be achieved in given sequence then despite of going to 4th phase after their completion we would start
with next weeks work . In such a manner after all 10 milestones are finished with their necessary phases done . We would
start with 4th phases of all milestones parallely with rest of work according to schedule that follows .
April 23: Accepted student proposals announced
April 24 - May 21 : Community Bonding period
May 2 - May 10 : College major exams and practicals .
July 9-13: Mid-term evaluation
July 24: College classes start
August 13 : Suggested Pencils down
August 20 : Firm Pencils down
August 24: Final Evaluation
My college summer schedule starts early but ends early too. It starts 11 days before Google's Official 'coding starts'
day. Summer ends 23 days before the suggested pencils down day I'll have a head start of about 20 days before the dates
in the Google timeline. I plan to start coding after my college exams end on May 10. That will give me 8 weeks before
mid-term evaluation. I intend to finish most of my project by mid-term evaluation. Testing, profiling and benchmarking
will be carried out side by side coding.
Here is a tentative week-by-week timeline.
Week 1 (10th May - 16th May) : Grammar using Xtext for primitive types and operations and their Xtend generator .
Week 2 (17th May - 23nd May) : Addition of Expressions and Variable Declarations .
Week 3 (24rd May - 30th May) : Addition of if-else , while and for loops .
Week 4 (31st May - 6th June) : Addition of for-each loops and its variants .
Week 5 (7th June - 13th June) : Function Declarations , Function Calls with arguments .
Week 6 (14th June - 20th June) : Type checking and type casting .
Week 7 (21th June - 27th June) : Rest of type casting with some static analysis .
Week 8 (28th June - 4th July) : Removing any bugs if exist in Xtend generator code .
5th to 9th july : Preaparing stable version for mid-term evaluation (With first three milestones achieved in parallel)
Mid-Term Evaluation (9th - 13th July)
Week 9 and 10 (14th July - 27th July) : Will add more functionalities that I come across later, through the mailing list
or through my mentor . And start documentation also will make code more efficient wherever possible .
Week 11 and 12 (28th July - 13th august) : Documentation Work .
More than 40hours/week of work is assured. I have nothing else(other than GSOC) planned for the summer .

I'm a Second year ( currently 4th semester ) undergraduate student pursuing Bachelors in Technology in the Indian
Institute of Technology Delhi, in the department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Relevant course I have taken/completed are:
CSL102 : Introduction to programming (Rather it was more of functional programming as i have done programming at school)
CSL201 : Data Structure and Algorithms
CSL302 : Programming Languages
CSP301 : Computer Science Practices (A practical course intended towards handling big projects)
CSL316 : Digital Hardware Design
In CSL102, I had implemented RSA encryption in python.
As an assignment for CSL302, I had designed and implemented a tiny Prolog interpreter and compiler using ML-lex and
ML-yacc .
In CSL201 i have made binary search trees , general trees , trees used for data compression , heap , traversals on trees
graphs , dfs(depth first search) and bfs(breadth first search) on graphs , dijkstra , prim-jarnik and kruskal's
algorithms on graphs , evrything above mentioned in JAVA with generic classes , functions and interfaces .
I am very good at programming language design and implementation . I have done implementation of Gentzen System of Logic
in Standard ML which included development of a parser , tokenizer and validity tester function (which work as executer) .
Importantly i have studied static analysis and implemented type checking rule . It was a part of assignments in CSL302
which i am currently studying during this semester . I have studied the Hopcroft & Ullman's introduction to automata
theory and familiar with most of programming languages concepts . In Digital Hardware Design (studying currently) course
we make state machines and models for system most of time , which is also done by ROOM also . So i find it easy to
understand ROOM . I have made Big Number package with fast multiply and divide , Multiplayer carrom over lan and
Institute room booking system in C ( jointly with my partner in course CSP301 as assignments with work equally divided) .
It made me handy with C(imperative programming) and SVN (version controlling and collaboration) skills . I am expert in
Java as it can be seen from my work in CSL201 course .
I think the above mentioned work and knowledge makes me a perfect choice for this project .
I work in both Windows7 and Linux(Familiar with most distros including openSUSE,fedora,ubuntu,backtrack,blackbuntu) .
