Fix deprecation warnings

Description of problem:
We are using packages in deprecated ways. We should upgrade how we leverage the code to make future upgrades easier (when the deprecated methods are getting removed)

Expected:
No deprecation warnings

Problem-relevant configuration.yaml entries and steps to reproduce:

Run py.test with a flag that causes an exception on deprecation warning: py.test tests/components/http -W error

There hasn't been any activity on this issue recently. Due to the high number of incoming GitHub notifications, we have to clean some of the old issues, as many of them have already been resolved with the latest updates.
