The problem

It's not possible to scroll the contents of or change/make a selection in a drop down-menu such as the area of a device or entity via the frontend UI - menu selection resets or edit window closes when a selection is made. The menu behaves as expected, scrolls and any entry can be selected, when using the keyboard as input.

Tested in MacOS 12.4. Problem present in Safari 15.5 and Firefox up to 101.0b6 (not sure which version problem started with). Chrome works as expected.

What version of Home Assistant Core has the issue?

2022.5.4

Additional information

I've also rolled back all the way to my earliest full backup of HA 2022.3.4 and still duplicated the issue. I recall this working in the past couple of months, I just can't remember in what version of HA and don't know when it first stopped working.

Workaround
If the Area drop-down menu is selected with the mouse, then manipulated with the cursor keys on the keyboard to scroll through list items, the selected area will "take" if enter/return is pressed.

I've edited the title and initial issue description...

It turns out this isn't specifically about switching areas, but it affects all menu selections using the mouse or trackpad on this system using either Firefox or Safari. Using Chrome, it works as expected. Latest version of each browser tested.

For example, I also can't change the entity on a dashboard card by selecting it with the mouse. Works fine if I scroll and select using the keyboard. I also can't scroll the contents of of the same menus using trackpad, but works with cursor keys.

I'm going to try from my Windows system with Firefox to see if the same happens there.

Menu selection and scrolling work as expected in Firefox 100.0 in Windows 10 and seems to be fixed in 101.0b7 for MacOS. Safari still broken.

It’s the same issue under IOS/IPadOS (however only since 15.5) regardless whether I use Safari, Chrome, Firefox, DuckDuckGo Browser or the Home Assistant App.
Under iOS 15.4 it does work

Can confirm this for iOS and iPadOS 15.5 in all Browser (since all use same Browser Kit) and latest Mac OS Safari. Other Browsers on MacOS work fine.

I might be wrong but I believe I have the exact same issue using the latest version of Chrome (102.0.5005.63). Firefox (100.0.2) seems to be working fine.
Using the keyboard arrows the selection menu works as expected. When using the mouse it somehows clicks behind the selection menu and so closes it.
