Quickstart example hangs terminal

When trying out the Quickstart example interactively, my terminal window hangs completely - no Ctl-C (or anything else, it seems) can unblock it.
The last sentence printed on 'c.events' was:

<Event 'Le Grand Nettoyage UrLab (GNU) ð

Might this be some local configuration issue? I frequently use unicode characters though.

The printed texts does include many raw texts such as Réunion décembre.

Am I doing something wrong here? (Linux Slackware64, Python 3.9.16)
