Oh crap: "With MacOS X 10.6.3 onwards, Apple has provided the "Video Decode Acceleration framework""

My VM is 10.6.2, so I guess this is specific to my VM ... arg (someday I'll get a real mac with a VM of the latest snow leopard...)

Closing, rather specific use-case for more or less deprecated plugin.
