I think rebuttals are critical. The reason this is not just a popularity contest that is easy to abuse is that all the reasoning should be apparent on the site.

The difficulty of making threaded discussions is no excuse you little punk! But of course you do not have to solve this problem at this stage.

How to prevent flame wars and endlessly deep threads? People can flag points that have already been made - but you would either have to trust them or a human has to check it and for scientific arguments that can be very labor intensive.

Maybe each rebuttal should have a one sentence summary that links to the full rebuttal and they should be forced to keep it generally short so people can see the forest and the trees.

Can people other than the authors rebut? Yes, why not. But the author rebuttal if it exists will be shown at the top?

I totally agree the plus/minus is crucial, as I noted in #4 Identity [?]. There needs to be a way to summarize the vast comments which get useless after a certain point. Maybe that's another idea/ticket though.
