I have used the knolleary version which i have hard time to subscribe to any topic
hardware: used Arduino uno+esp8266/nodemcu(conneted via serial rx tx)

Yes, I have subscribed with it many times with ESP8266 - this was clearly related to a more specific problem. Recommend issue closure.
