There are a few ways identifications can be created using inactive taxon concepts, including
Vision suggestions (the model is based on a static list of taxon IDs, any of which could become de-activated before the next model comes out)
Cached taxa in the iPhone app
While dealing with this for splits is possibly tricky, we can definitely create new identifications with the active synonyms of taxa de-activated by swaps and merges.
Regarding point 1, there is at least some delay on the CV still because I made a taxon inactive via a swap August 3, 2020 and it was still coming up in the CV a month later:
Running the CV on that same image now (Dec 2020) gives the new taxon for Argynnis instead.
