People would like to see if an observation is the first one of that taxon posted to iNaturalist. We discussed this in the 1/18/24 Web Circle meeting and decided to go ahead with an issue, but there'll have to be some hashing things out and design work.

  • On obs detail page, display a label that says "First on iNaturalist" if the observation represents the first observation of that taxon posted to iNaturalist, based on the observation's posted-on date and observation taxon. This should be fetched dynamically.
  • Clicking on the label should show a pop-up similar to establishment means and conservation status that says "This is the first known observation of this taxon posted to iNaturalist."
  • @abhasinat can you provide some design input re: label and placement?

Here's a first stab at critera we should use:

  • observation should be verifiable. RG might incentivize people to add unwarranted agreeing IDs
  • I think we should only go as high as genus at the start, but am open to going up to subfamily, since that's the maximum cutoff for RG

Here's a design for the button:

And here's what placement should look like. I would place it after status and before quality grade:

We already use a star and that green color for the endemic label, and I bet a decent number of these observatiosn will also be of endemic species.

I can't think of great alternatives at the moment. Would a checkmark work? A leaf?

Good point. How about a bookmark label?

And maybe inverted as well for some contrast.
