Occasionally, when investigating system issues, it may be better if we let the server process terminate when a panic occurs. Especially if we're investigating issues on a high traffic server where panic messages may get lost.
Further, we currently do not have any metrics around the occurrence of panics, so users may be getting panics and not even realising it (especially if they're not monitoring response codes to writes/queries).
