While I was adding the Read The Docs badge (in #1051 ), I noticed that our README.md file throws a bit more information at the user than I think is ideal. So this is an issue assigned to me to see if I can do better. No one else needs to work on this :)

I improved this a little for 3.0, but I think we could do better again for 3.1 so I'm moving this to the new milestone.
