While this is not a real feature, I find that it helps to have a sample template with all the features expressed in the sample template. Something along the lines of: https://github.com/hdpatel/jekyll-scholar-extras/tree/master/samples/jekyll-template

That's a good point. Perhaps we could provide a seed/best-practices repository which contains a default set-up with commented configuration etc.?

Yes. We could use what I point to above as a starting point, and clean it up.

If you're up for this, it might be useful to use github pages for jekyll-scholar to display the output as well for the enabled features. This would allow someone to see how the HTML looks when rendered without actually even trying it.

Did anyone ever create a sample pages? I am having trouble getting it to run.
