1P_STORIES_SUCCESSFULLY_FINISHED_ON_TIME

A one-point story should take less than a day to finish

{
  "id": "1P_STORIES_SUCCESSFULLY_FINISHED_ON_TIME",
  "notes": "#### Description\r\n```\r\nTP-1: 75% of 1-point stories should take less than 1 day to finish (from start to finish).\r\n```\r\n\r\n**Why?** This Team Practice (TP) represents our expectations for 1-point stories. 1-point stories should be concrete enough that the implementation strategy is mostly known to the team. This reduced uncertainty with the problem should lead to a more straightforward implementation and therefore should be completed in 1 day.\r\n\r\n**How?** When starting a project, it can be difficult to estimate how much work needs to be done in gathering information before a solution to a problem can be implemented. For this reason, at the beginning, learning time should be incorporated into pointing a story. However, as the members of the team become more comfortable with the codebase, a general implementation strategy of a problem can be discussed at the Iteration Planning Meeting (IPM) itself. This reduces uncertainty later on, and quick, easy tasks can therefore be assigned 1-point. These tasks should be finished within 24 hours after they are started.\r\n\r\nThe number presented is the percentage of 1-point stories that are finished within 24 hours. The number should be above 75.",

MAJORITY_OF_1P_STORIES

More than half of started features should be 1-point

  "notes": "#### Description\r\n```\r\nTP-3: 50% of the backlog stories should be 1 point.\r\n```\r\n\r\n**Why?** Stories with a high point imply uncertainties and risks. Having more 1-point stories allow the developers to make fewer decisions at a time and get more information to reduce the uncertainties for other stories.\r\n\r\n**How?** It can be difficult to have 1-point stories at the beginning because learning should be taken into consideration when you pointing a story. If learning has to happen before implementing a story, then this story may be more than one point.\r\n\r\nHowever, as you are more experienced in the technology and you learn more about the code base, you should have more 1-point stories that are concrete enough to know the implementation strategy beforehand.\r\n\r\nWhen you start a new feature, you may have to deal with stories that are large and uncertain. You can consider creating small spike stories to quickly get more information to reduce the uncertainties.\r\n\r\nThe number presented is the percentage of 1-point stories in the backlog. ONE_STORY_AT_A_TIME

  "notes": "#### Description\r\n```\r\nTP-4: One person should work on only one story at a time.\r\n```\r\n\r\n**Why?** Multitasking causes the overhead of context switching. Furthermore, multitasking usually implies waiting as the contributor has to wait for others to continue working on a story. Thus, multitasking is an indicator of software engineering wastes (time spent that does not general values to the customer).\r\n\r\n**How?** When planning an iteration, discuss stories that might be dependent (or blocked) on completing others. These tasks should be properly organized to prevent situations of forced multitasking (one persons task is dependent on a second persons task to be completed, and that second person needs to stop whatever they are doing to complete that task).\r\n\r\nThis number is the number of stories that a person is working on. A person is working on a story if that person owns the story and the story's status is started. Your number should not be over 1.",

NO_REMAINING_POINTS

A team should finish the backlog by the end of an iteration

{
  "id": "NO_REMAINING_POINTS",
  "notes": "#### Description\r\n```\r\nTP-5: The sum of unfinished stories points is 0 by the end of an iteration.\r\n```\r\n\r\n**Why?** This Team Practice (TP) describes the expectation for finishing the backlog. At the end of the iteration, all of the given tasks that were planned for that iteration should be completed and delivered to the customer. Any discrepancy in this shows an inaccuracy in assigning points to the stories in the planning phase.\r\n\r\n**How?** It is critical that as you gain experience with a project, programming language, and code base, that your (and your teams) ability to properly assign work improves. Although this may be difficult in the first few iterations, your team should get significantly better at estimating how much work can be delivered to the customer at the end of an iteration. This is the goal of having Iteration Planning Meetings (to properly assign points for the next iteration), and Retrospectives (to reflect on how much work your team is able to complete in an iteration).\r\n\r\nThe number presented is the number of remaining points in the backlog. Stories will be removed from the sum when they are `delivered`. This number should not be over 0 by the end of an iteration.\r\n\r\nThe graph that shows the remaining points in the backlog is a [Burn down Chart](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burn_down_chart). It is widely used in Agile teams to track progress.",
