Because giphy have a lot of integrations, like slack. :)

I looked at it at the beginning of the project.

Advantages:

  • It would fix social media sharing, mainly twitter
  • No server costs
  • Integrations

Problems:

  • You must request access to production api. Not specified how many days it can take and we wanted to release fast
  • They have a daily limit of 1000 uploads, and we had like 40k unique gifs in the first 2 days
  • You must write "powered by giphy" and stuff like that

We can contact them, if they increase the limit I totally think it's better.

My clone now supports Giphy - see #14 for a link.

UPDATE: my fork uses only the beta key, and after I've contacted Giphy regarding getting a production key, they've replied that they cannot issue me one, because I'm planning on manipulating content to which I don't own the copyrights.

@brunolemos have you tried contacting them? Did they reply? I wonder who owns the copyrights for this video?

@customstickers thanks for the update. Yeah they probably won't allow it
