similar to how markdown has different flavor expansions, we could support different special character handling extensions.

current ideas:

@Q at beginning toggles block quote styling
... at the end of a text leaf node enables infinite expansion
... what else?

should be a general function that provides affordances for custom rendering and interactive logic
