The Rock distracted Austin, allowing Mr. McMahon to sneak up behind him and toss him over the rope, winning the match and earning a spot in the main event of WrestleMania XV.
However, Mr. McMahon's victory was short-lived, as he was forced to defend his Royal Rumble win against Austin on the next night's Raw. Austin won the match and reclaimed his WrestleMania opportunity, setting up a rematch with The Rock for the WWE Championship.
The 1999 Royal Rumble match was not the only memorable moment of the night, as it was preceded by one of the most brutal matches in WWE history. The Rock defended his WWE Championship against Mankind in an "I Quit" match, where the only way to win was to make your opponent say "I quit". The match was a violent spectacle, as both men used chairs, handcuffs, and even a microphone to inflict pain on each other.
The match ended controversially, when The Rock handcuffed Mankind's hands behind his back and repeatedly hit him in the head with a steel chair. Mankind refused to quit, but Mr. McMahon played a recording of Mankind saying "I quit" from an earlier interview, fooling the referee into ending the match and awarding The Rock the victory. Mankind later revealed that he never said "I quit" during the match, and demanded a rematch.

X-Pac had won the title from D'Lo Brown on Raw, and Gangrel had earned a title shot by winning a battle royal on Heat.
