Determine whether a device is a bulb/ outlet/ ...

Being fairly new to Python and especially the TinyTuya API, I am struggling to determine something.
I have some outlets, and some bulbs.
Programmatically, I can get information on each device, including its MAC address, ... and yet I cannot seem to find a way to determine if the device is an outlet or a bulb!
I know I can deduce manually which is which, but it would be nice if I could determine in software and only revert to some kind of manual intervention when I am really stuck (rather than being stuck immediately!).

Look at the "category" key in devices.json. Most smart bulbs are going to be "dj" while most smart plugs are going to be "cz." A list of some of the more common codes can be found at https://github.com/0x5e/homebridge-tuya-platform/blob/develop_1.7.0/SUPPORTED_DEVICES.md

My apologies for the silence - I had an idea (usually, not helpful!).
All 4 devices do show up in the Smart life app.
All 4 devices show up in the developer cloud.
All 4 devices show up (sometimes I have to run it twice) in the deviceScan function.
However, only the wizard fails to see all 4 devices, and finds one.
Similarly, programmatically, the cloud only provides one device.
Whilst I tested naming the devices manually - which I agree isn't ideal, I also had the idea that in the cloud, one can see a product name, rather than product ID, so I contacted Tuya, who were incredibly unhelpful.
I haven't got to the bottom of this, as Tuya seem to think ignoring a support request is "constructive"!
So far, I think one could use e.g. cURL to get a list of product IDs/ associate them with current products.
I began to look through the source code to the Tuya API, and saw it uses headers, which I tried to mimic, but the response was completely unhelpful - like Tuya!
I believe the API sends headers :-

and there is an address for each data centre - for Europe it is https://openapi.tuyaeu.com/.
There are two different "GET" requests that are relevant:-
GET: /v1.0/iot-03/device-categories and GET /v1.0/devices/{device_id}
The latter should provide the device category for the device.

That makes sense. The wizard is doing the same thing you are doing (programmatically asking the cloud).

I'm afariad I'm not able to be much help without having the same devices as you do. Can you share the links to the devices? I may be able to purchase some to see if I can reproduce your problem and find a fix.

In the meantime, please let us know if you find a fix!

I will try to find links and add them to the thread.
Two devices are sockets, which I have had for maybe 10 years or so; one is a dual light switch, and another is a bulb where one can change the colour etc.

I have been playing more, and have seen some odd things!
All four devices appear in the apps, and all four appear with full details in the iot.tuya.com site.
However, on 3 out of 4 devices, the names using tinytuya are returned as blank.
For all four devices, if I try to obtain the status, I get an error: set_status() result {'Error': 'Network Error: Unable to Connect', 'Err': '901', 'Payload': None}.
I then thought that I would try to turn different devices on and off - which I hadn't tried this far, as I thought it was working.
I first tried a socket, which didn't work, and then tried the light switches, and the bulb, and none worked.
I then thought I would try to get the colour information etc from the bulb and the brightness returns {} and that is as far as I have got.
I suspect there is something more seriously awry that I don't understand.
Just to clarify, if I display the results of the deviceScan (as run from Python), I do get things like the IP address, MAC address, gwId, id, ... but some fields can be blank, which I wasn't worried about.
I used the sample code for the turning an outlet device on modified for my IP address, ...

You can also try turning on debug mode to see what is happening in the handshake with the device - after the import:

With the debug switched on, I get the following (with the ID information removed, just in case):
For turning a bulb on:-

The three id's are the same, and the "t" was a 10 digit number.

The debug did show (as I expected from the output without debug) that I can connect to all devices.

Does this throw any light on the issue?

Looking over everything again, it looks like the values TinyTuya is sending are correct. Not sure what the problem is unless your bulb just cannot tolerate multiple DPs being sent at once (your monitor output shows the Tuya app sending DPs 1, 2, and 5 separately, while TinyTuya sends all 3 at once).

Does the following code do anything?
