The Dublin Core™ Metadata Initiative Type is recommended for the Dublin Core format element (177). Controlled vocabularies help categorize the resources presented to users according to their meaningful or semantic relationships. It is grouping items by shared characteristics that improves resource discovery/retrieval for users. With search, the user thinks up terms to match what's in the metadata; with browse, metadata terms and categories are presented to the user as choices (165-166). If metadata creators enter inconsistent values into the same field in different metadata records, users won't be able to discover resource or retrieve information efficiently (166). Local controlled vocabularies need to be developed when the project involves names (local people, place, organizations, etc.) that haven't been established in national authority files or the project's subject does not have comprehensive and well-established terms for indexing (180-181). Top‐down and bottom‐up methods differ in their starting points. The former goes about gleaning terms from existing sources (controlled vocabularies or other sources) whereas the latter generates a list of potential terms from analyzing the digital objects in the collection (181). |

What standard vocabulary is recommended for the Dublin Core format element? Include a link to a resource that lists the possible values from the standard vocabulary. In what ways do controlled vocabularies improve resource discovery for users? How do the search and browse methods of information seeking differ? What happens when metadata creators enter inconsistent values into the same field in different metadata records? In what cases might an organization choose to create one or more of its own controlled vocabularies? What is the difference between the so-called top-down and bottom-up methods of controlled vocabulary creation? |
