This seems to be written with python 2 in mind and hasn't been updated in 5 years. Would you be willing to write updates or review PRs updating it for more recent python versions?

Sure! I might take a look at doing it if I have some free time but any PRs would be appreciated.

I have the repo forked and set up locally. Once #3 is closed (see #4 ) , I'll start working on this.
