The current kernel will already boot a large amount of systems, but it only has a few network drivers built in. Adding desktop support will also mean adding in drivers for video, sound, wireless, and others.
It might be nice to start small and add support in as requested/needed, but I also don't want to unnecessarily hamper new ones from being able to use the system.
