Hi,
Thanks for your question. Yes, NVIDIA cards are necessary for PyTorch GPU programming. You cannot use an AMD card in PyTorch (Tensorflow also does not support AMD btw). However, you may still run this project in CPU mode if you want, although it would be much slower.
