Instead of relying on exclusively relying GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS, it'd be good to additionally support granular elements in a credentials setting that accepts a JSON object.

that totally makes sense. Are you planning on passing the OAuth2 credentials as documented here https://gcloud.readthedocs.io/en/latest/bigquery-client.html#google.cloud.bigquery.client.Client or are you more interested in passing what would essentially be the content of the JSON file?
