The combined use of path and URL and how the URL instance is created feels hack-ish to me, but here's a first attempt. Let me know what you think.
The URL instance creation workaround is because the URL class is quite strict in the input it accepts.
URL discards relative paths, so I use path to work around that.
Fixes #36
