I've compiled this on Mojave as a 64-bit, and I get a whole load of fortunes, all in ROT13! It looks like fortune thinks they're all offensive and is missing the end marker.
Using the alterations made by tristanmorgan fixed all the problems. You should pull his changes into the main code.
