From the different Python modes that seem to be available. Does Elpy work best with python-mode or with the python.el that comes with Emacs?

Elpy is designed for and tested with the python.el that comes with Emacs 24.x (there are actually two, 24.3 has a new and improved one). While Elpy will try to actively complain if it finds python-mode.el, some features might also work with that, but no guarantees and if it breaks you get to keep both parts. :-)
