As discussed with Marcus Foster, the combination of a number and a unit is a quantity. This suggests that \si should really be called \unit and that \SI should be called \quant (\quantity is rather too long, I think). Clearly, the existing names should also be retained but depreciated.

Okay, I've thought about this some more. Looking long-term (LaTeX3), I'd be happier with \qty and \unt, but for siunitx the decision was made some time ago. The need for consistency with column letters is also important. So I'm going to WONTFIX this, but keep it in mind for the future. (I've got some plans for a LaTeX3 version of some of the code here: probably a long way off, but worth at least giving some though to.)
