If the required tags are not there, it can break very important things, like unsubscriptions.

Perhaps look for all that's required, and if it's not there, show the default (and place an error in the error log? )

There should really be a double-check on if custom templates and one-click subscribe work, and if not, bug this.

Yes - see: #836 - javascript (at the very least) need to be referenced in the header.
