Spectral classification has been tackled by the Opticks project, which is open source. Maybe a commandline interface could be used? http://opticks.org/confluence/display/opticksDev/Google+Summer+of+Code

Very simple version suggested by nice person: for each pair of (new spectrum,stored spectrum), diff them, square the output, integrate it, and store it as a measure of how good the match was.
