@ericwa could you please have a look at this PR and test the vertex, edge, and face tools a bit? I have no idea why I ever considered the original PR to work. I know I tested it, but I have no idea how it could have worked in its current state. In any case, it works now, but it required a few awkward changes, so there's potential of a regression.

I tested moving shared faces/vertices/edges a bit, along with undo/redo.. seems to all work properly.
