Welcome! This is a third generation site for Knowledge Commons DC (contact@knowledgecommonsdc.org).

Basics

Respect user privacy. Student names, contact information, enrollment, and attendance is confidential. Do not give it to anyone outside of the KCDC organizing team, and do not share it with teachers. (That's right: we do not provide student contact information to teachers.)

Do not add people as staff. Staff can view or edit anything on the website. Please have new Dojo members talk to the website admins so that they can get an orientation to the site. (We assign new Dojo members to the dojo permissions group, rather than making them superusers.) Assign volunteer facilitators class-by-class.

Changing registrations

If you change a registration by hand, you need to email the student, because they won't get automated emails about the change.

Get started

Apps

  • Classes is the major part of the site. It lists class descriptions, records student enrollment, and displays class documentation. Facilitators and staff can view enrollment, and a new dashboard will let us analyze course and student activity. The app also handles all editorial biographies in the site, whether for teachers, volunteers, or Dojo members.

  • Pinata is a tiny content management system, so named because it contains all kinds of goodies. It lets you create pages with text and images, assign those pages to a web address, and add those pages to each section's local navigation links. Pinata will also handle more structured information like the contribute section. (Parts of Pinata pull information from Classes -- notably, the staff bios.)

  • Pigeon is a blog-posting app. The name comes from the idea of a "pigeon post," carrying the mail with homing pigeons.

  • Squirrel helps us handle administrative tasks.
