leaving UTF8 for the locale is better to be able to handle any filename. The sort function may differ, but it is still consistent across the two files, meaning that only non duplicates will be found by uniq.

Does export LC_ALL=C make the script crash or does it make the sorting wrong? I'm not really sure what does "script not work properly" mean.

The files are not backed up prior to deleting and also when the filename is put in fetch-exclude, rsync doesn't recognize it. Happens for accents in both file name and also in any folder of the path.
