We can run worker nodes on ubuntun trusty on GCE, but not master node today.

Refactor cluster/gce/trusty/node.yaml
d6aabec 
The node.yaml has some logic that will be also used by the kubernetes
master on trusty work (issue kubernetes#16702). This change moves the code
shared by the master and node configuration to a separate script, and
the master and node configuration can source it to use the code.
Moreover, this change stages the script for GKE use.

Yes, I am working on this. When it can pass e2e test I will send out for review. What is the code freeze date for 1.2 release?

As PR #20463 gets merged, the functionality-wise work is done. But there are still a couple of TODO left to make the whole work better.
